Unlike the last poster I do like the Philippines; have worked there twice and visited on many occasions. (Guess where my wife comes from!) But his comments are entirely justified; the Filipino nation has nothing to be proud of; the place is a disgrace to its citizens. From the second richest nation in Asia after Japan at Independence, the Philippines is now poorer than anywhere except Cambodia in terms of GDP per head. It also has the highest birth rate in SE Asia and some of the highest rates of maternal mortality, malnutrion in children, abortion and non-attendance at schools anywhere on the planet.

Who did this? Not foreigners - the Pinoys have done it to themselves. Nobody has invaded them; theyr land has not been fought over, they have receieved foreign aid and indeed reparations from Japan, and yet their elite has turned the place into what you see today.

There is nothing wrong with the people - take a Filipino or a Filipina out of the Philippines and you have as good a man or woman as anyone else. The problem is that so few people who could take the trouble are willing to do so.

i just got back from the philippines... have been there about 10 times in the past 25 years but never as a "tourist" always for work. (us govt) saw that the philippines was trying to promote itself as a tourist and retirement destination thought i would give it a try. big mistake, the place is a nightmare, a dump ! and you cant justify it cause its cheap cause its not ! stayed at one place in manila 50 bucks a night and the tv picture was so snowy couldnt watch it, one place was 100 a night and wanted 10 bucks more for wifi ! (went to restaurant and got on) cheapest gasoline i saw was 51 pesos a liter which is 50% higher than what im paying here in nevada 2.99 a gallon. (you can do the math) food might be a bit cheaper but sanitation was a problem at the cheap places. fast food is just as high as states but portions smaller and chili in wendys was 91 pesos or $2.10 its only $1.40 here. didnt see any crime but there are guards everywhere, makes me nervous , couldnt sleep cause of all the traffic which isnt sooo bad but they constantly honk . found a more quiet place but then a dog started barking all night then there are the videoke places.many beggars and ya feel sorry for the homeless kids (they estimate 2 million) but you can only do so much, you eat in a restaurant and youve got kids peering in the window and pawing begging for food and then guard shoos the away and i feel sick like im heartless. the burocracy is brutal, saw businesses with like 15 forms on the wall including a license exactly like a license plate (metalic). its very overcrowded , no peace and quiet at all , no places sit down and no toilet paper in stalls and didnt see any nice rivers or lakes , all polluted, many trucks and buses belching smoke and burns your eyes. tv, computers 20 to 30% more expensive than usa , vat 12% and the girls?
they were friendly but most are short, stubby legs, no behind, flat chested and looked like well... monk---
also it costs like 500 bucks a year to get a retirement visa. i wouldnt stay there if you gave me 500 bucks a year ! who in their right mind would retire there should have their head examined (just to save a few bucks on booze and smokes??)the stress is mind numbing, i could go on and on, oh and you cant own a gun to defend yourself or buy land . please dont bother telling me to leave or if i dont like it dont come back etc because dont worry i wont.
fyi i have been to over 100 countries, dual citizenship us/canada, permanent resident visa chile/argentina/uk.

Hey Jokephotos,
Along the same lines,, Like several people, I have owned plus played movie games since I was a young girl. Of course, back then the options were only somewhat more advanced than "pong" or "area invaders." If those titles didn't capture a attention, there was always playing outside (at least that's what my parents constantly told me). Nowadays, it appears that everywhere we turn, a hot more advanced program is available. We've got options available, my friend.
Nice One!

Are you kidding.
Lets put some perspective and stop trying to compare Philippines with other countries.

1. Australians are most likely to get murdered on holidays in the Philippines.
2. 3rd worst country for journalists to die after Somalia and Iraq.
3. Theres a high need for security. Not just banks.. starbucks, hairdressers, travel agents etc
4. The country has a civil war going on (Mindanao) with Muslim and communist problems.
5. Wages are chronically low compared with living standards. Heard of suicide week where money simply runs out?
6. Cops recently charged with murder, kidnapping, drunken behaviour (on a regular basis in Manila and other parts).
7. Guns are a plenty.
8. the official police stats are a fraud. The barangay data isnt included.
9. Cebu recently had a spate of driveby shootings.

The foreigners are mostly scum that come here. The Americans, Australians, UK and other Europeans arent the run of the mill types. They are mostly here for cheap booze and sex. Get real. Apart from diving, sex what else is there? Id do my shopping in Thailand. Theres only 1 solely Indian restaurant in Cebu (pop. 1.6m), theres only 1 solely vietnamese restaurant in Cebu, Ayala mall is rated #1 tourist attraction on tripadvisor. You got the drift that its a whole lot of people about a whole lot of nothing. The beaches have floating trash on them... pity the filipinos dont care about their beaches to warrant getting satisfactory garbage services in place.

The list goes on and no, what other countries are you trying to compare it to?
